ESPN Should Make TSN's SportsCentre Available for... →
Nice Deadspin deconstruction about how TSN’s SportsCentre is different than ESPN’s version. Bottom line: more hockey. Hey ESPN, why not make this version available online for hockey fans, or substitute one hour of Canada’s SportsCentre on one of the mother ships many channels overnight? Hockey fans would love you for it? Or how about just taking TSN’s hockey coverage, and...

Jonathan Quick: F-Bombadier →
Some LA City Councilman said he drank a beer with Jonathan Quick while they were riding on a float in today’s Stanley Cup parade, and it certainly seemed like the 26-year old goalie had consumed one too many pops when he gave a victory speech later in the day at the Staples Center. Stay classy, Milford.

R.A. Dickey and Baseball's King Jerk
I have to admit, I’ve never really been bothered much by Alex Rodriguez (though I admit he gave me a great laugh during the famous ball swatting incident against the Red Sox in the 2004 playoffs). But after reading R.A. Dickey’s searing memoir, I’m more than ready to jump on the anti-ARod bandwagon.
How did it happen? Well, let’s just say that it didn’t take long...

MJ: A Spiteful Superman →
Just got through watching NBA TV’s documentary on the “Dream Team,” and it was an enjoyable 90 minutes, if not quite up to the standard that Ross Greenberg set over at HBO with his “Sports of the 20th Century” series.
There are plenty of surprises over the course of the program, but the one that everyone is jumping on right now is how open Scottie Pippen was about...

Inspector Javert and Lance Armstrong →
I guess it was inevitable that the folks at the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency would keep taking runs at Lance Armstrong. In their minds, he’s seen as the greatest scofflaw and the greatest prize. As for Lance, whether he’s innocent or guilty, his response will inevitably be the same. The man beat cancer and conquered the Tour de France seven straight times. He’s been outrunning doom...

Not the best idea Rick DiPietro ever had ... →
Everybody loves hockey fights. That goes double for goalie fights, which is why I was as giddy as a little girl when I watched this tussle between Brent Johnson of the Pens and Rick DiPietro of the Islanders earlier this evening. I guess I could say the outcome here was an apt metaphor for DiPietro’s career on the Island, but that might be too easy.
Red-light cameras save lives, study says →
Like a lot of folks, I hate the use of cameras in traffic enforcement. As far as I’m concerned, they’re nothing more than an elaborate tax. But what really made my blood boil today was reading this story by Ashley Halsey III in today’s Washington Post about a study on how red light cameras supposedly save lives. Here’s the comment I left in the comment string after the WaPo...
Lightning Unveil New Logo, Jersey Systems Along... →
Some thoughts:
I’m sure the new owners think that changing the logo and uniform allow them to put their own stamp on the franchise, but I think it can be dangerous too. The Lightning isn’t just another expansion franchise, this is a team that won a Stanley Cup not too long ago, and fans have happy memories associated with the original uniform and color scheme.
As for the new...

quoted from BCS Pays Out Record $170 Million To College Football Conferences
While the debate still rages about a playoff system ultimately replacing the Bowl Championship Series in college football, a new report suggests that major college programs are doing very well…
No, nobody is making any money on college football.
Echoes of the Past at Verizon Cener
Just got finished watching the Caps and Rangers on Versus, and it was hard not to notice all of the Rangers fans that were in attendance. They were there and let everyone know it when the Rags finally scored and then again in a victorious shootout.
It was only a year ago that we thought those days were over in D.C. One has to wonder what the mid-season swoon has done for the ticket re-sale...
Isles Snag Nabby
Good on Garth Snow snagging Nabby away from the Wings. He’ll bring a nice price at the trade deadline.
UPDATE: My bad. Nanny needs to pass through waivers before Snow could trade him. In light of that info, I can’t understand the move at all.

Cox: Caps’ owner unafraid to speak his mind -... →
After engaging in an online range war with the Caps organization in the run up to the release of his book on Alex Ovechkin, Damien Cox now offers the Caps owner an online Valentine. Does Cox not realize that we have long memories here in DC?
Hackel Shoots High and Wide on Leonsis Column →
I know it’s been a few days, but I still can’t get over the column that SI’s Stu Hackel filed earlier this week about Caps owner Ted Leonsis and how he supposedly needs to get out of the way and let the hockey professionals he employs get their jobs done.
As I was reading it, I got the impression that Hackel had prepared a generic cautionary tale for any NHL owner, and had just...
Kings GM and His Coach Take on NHL HQ on Instant... →
If this statement had come in the midst of last season, it still would have elicited gasps from the NHL community. But now, in the wake of the publication of Colin Campbell’s emails about officiating, charges like this one take on a whole new dimension. I’d expect Dean Lombardi and Terry Murray to get heavy fines and a public upbraiding from Gary Bettman. As for what happens behind the...

The New Jersey Devils play-by-play voice shares some needed perspective about Alex Ovechkin’s unexpected dip into the doldrums. His message: this too shall pass. My message: put down the magnifying glass and call me after the trade deadline.
